Today, gambling has been a subject of many disputes and debate. Most countries legalize it while some others ban it. The fact that these gambling activities hurt the economy of the society makes it notorious in the eyes of the concerned public. Gambling, however, has many definitions based on different contexts but normally, people wrongly perceive it as something negative and detrimental.
Gambling started the same way as the different card games, skill games and games of recreation were conceived. Only that these activities involved money or something valuable at stake.
Gambling became so popular with the rise of casinos which offered customers a wide variety of games which they could play as long as they want to. Poker, blackjack, roulette, slot machines, and the like are the most common games in the casinos. Plus, the addition of live entertainment and performances in casinos entice customers to come, visit and gamble their money away.
There are different forms of gambling. To name some are casino games, non-casino games, fixed-odds gambling, pari-mutuel gambling, sports betting, arbitrage betting, and staking systems. There are also several fluctuating situations considered in gambling.
First is the amount of money at stake or betted. Second is the type of gambling, either machine operated- which have unpredicted outcome and results, or actual gambling- the type of horse races, sporting events - wherein someone expert on that field could find an advantage. And lastly, the agreements and conditions as agreed upon by the better and the house.
Gambling is so discouraged by many. Especially those concerned with the economy because they argue that huge amounts of money, instead of being used in investments and productive utilities, are being risked to vanish into nothingness.
On the other hand, there are beneficial effects brought about by gambling. People who engage themselves in gambling make up their social life. They make use of going to casinos as becoming a socially healthy individual. Also, a certain study at Yale University revealed that "older people in the range of 65 and above are healthier as compared to those who do not gamble."
Gambling is indeed very controversial. For a long time it has been the subject of many heated discussions mostly on moral and economic grounds. Deliberations whether it should or should not be allowed. However, with the rise of internet and online gaming, gambling has become more widespread and even though there are countries banning it, people can still find a way online to gamble. But whatever the outcome of their discussion is, gambling has been a tradition of many people and it would be extremely hard to eradicate it from any society.
